Ukraine wins its first Oscar with “20 Days in Mariupol”

This past weekend, Ukraine won her first Oscar with the documentary film “20 Days in Mariupol”. Though the circumstances of winning this Oscar are horrible and heart wrenching, it is important for the war against Ukraine and those that suffered to be recognized, and not go unseen.

In a time where Ukrainians are constantly up against propaganda and misinformation, it is more important than ever for viewers to watch the truth unfold.

Director Mstyslav Chernov said during his speech: “I’ll be the first director on this stage who will say ‘I wish I never made this film’. I wish to be able to exchange this to Russia never attacking Ukraine, never occupying our cities. I wish to give it all the recognition to Russia not killing tens of thousands of my fellow Ukrainians”.

We, here in Colorado, have featured this film in a couple of our film festivals. We have many refugees from Mariupol, who suffered losing their homes and family members. We are proud to have them here, and to see the world recognizing their pain.

We are on our way to victory. Together and the truth is the way!
