A Report to Our Supporters

On February 24, 2022, the lives of all Ukrainians around the world changed. Ukrainians of Colorado gathered on the Capitol steps in Denver to unite with fellow Ukrainians and others from around the state to show support for Ukraine as it withstood a brutal attack. On that day, Russia launched a massive, unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and, in effect, declared war on the Ukrainian nation. On that day, Ukrainians of Colorado stepped up our presence in Denver and around the state and launched our journey of support to those in need in Ukraine.

As a 501(C)3 non-profit organization founded in 2014 by a group of Ukrainian-Americans women, who were passionate about preserving and promoting their heritage, Ukrainians of Colorado has always stood for uniting Ukrainians and preserving Ukrainian heritage. Under this broad mandate, we have worked to foster cultural and educational exchanges between Ukrainians and Americans, to support Ukrainian cultural activities and events, and to preserve the Ukrainian community in Colorado.

However, as Putin’s Russia intensified its subversive actions against Ukraine following the Euromaidan protests, illegally annexing Crimea and invading the Donbas, Ukrainians of Colorado could not stand idly by. We began working tirelessly to provide humanitarian support to Ukrainians affected by the war.

In response to the full-scale invasion last year, Ukrainians of Colorado organized a solidarity event in Denver to show support for our homeland. We began working closely with other groups, such as Sunflower Seeds Ukraine and Human Hearts United, to deliver medical supplies, military gear, and other forms of aid to Ukraine. Ukrainians of Colorado has also partnered with restaurants, churches, and establishments across the state to raise funds for those impacted by the conflict.

Our efforts are not only focused on delivering aid to Ukraine, but also on raising awareness of the ongoing conflict and promoting Ukrainian culture and heritage in Colorado. Through events such as the annual Ukrainian Festival and cultural workshops, Ukrainians of Colorado worked to educate the community about Ukraine's rich history and traditions. The profits from these events go directly towards humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

Ukrainians of Colorado's mission to restore and strengthen the Ukrainian community in Colorado is intrinsically linked to its efforts to support those affected by the war in Ukraine. The organization's commitment to providing aid and support to Ukraine demonstrates the power of community-driven initiatives in creating positive change in the world.

How Do We Help Ukraine?

Donations and Support

Aid for Ukrainians:

The conflict in Ukraine has caused immense suffering for the people of this peace-loving nation. Ukrainians of Colorado has taken it upon themselves to provide aid to those who have been affected by the conflict, sending aid to areas such as Donetsk, Kherson, Dnipro, and Zaporizhia – cities and regions heavily devastated by the war.

Through a major fundraising campaign, Ukrainians of Colorado has been able to fund the purchase of medical supplies and humanitarian aid for Ukrainians who are suffering from the devastation of the invasion. The organization has also extended support to the soldiers and villages near the frontlines by providing medical and tactical gear, including generators, chargers, tourniquets, firewood, and other necessities.

The efforts of Ukrainians of Colorado have not only provided vital aid to those affected by the conflict but have also demonstrated the solidarity and support of the Ukrainian community in Colorado. By working tirelessly to raise funds and provide aid, this organization has shown that even small contributions can make a big difference in the lives of those in need.

Children of Ukraine:

Ukrainians of Colorado has made it a top priority to provide assistance to the children of Ukraine, especially those in orphanages and those with disabilities. These children are some of the most vulnerable and in need of help, and the organization has made it their mission to provide them with the resources they need to thrive.

By providing food, diapers, clothes, medicine, and other necessities, Ukrainians of Colorado is making a significant impact on the lives of these children. The organization's efforts have helped to alleviate the financial burdens of these orphanages, allowing them to focus on providing better care and support to the children in their care. The dedication and commitment of Ukrainians of Colorado to improving the lives of Ukrainian children is truly essential.

Zoos and Animals:

Not only has this war affected humans, but it has affected the lives of animals as well. Ukrainians of Colorado extended its help beyond human beings and has initiated a fundraising campaign to support major zoos in Ukraine. This effort is a collaborative initiative with Denver Zoo, and aims to provide aid to animals who are affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The zoos in Ukraine have been facing difficulties in acquiring food, medicine, and other essential supplies for their animals due to the war.

The initiative taken by Ukrainians of Colorado is a unique and humanitarian approach to providing aid during times of conflict. It shows that even during war, there are ways to help and support different segments of society. By providing aid to zoos in Ukraine, the organization is not only supporting the animals, but also helping to maintain a sense of normalcy in the lives of people who work at the zoos, and those who visit them.

Volunteers Traveling with Medical Supplies:

Volunteers for Ukrainians of Colorado have been actively working towards providing aid to those in need in Ukraine. In addition to their local efforts, these volunteers have also traveled to various places in Europe, such as Germany and Poland, to deliver much-needed medical supplies to other volunteers of Ukrainians of Colorado stationed there. These supplies are then sent to those in need in Ukraine, particularly in regions affected by the ongoing conflict.

The initiative to travel to other parts of Europe to deliver medical supplies is an excellent example of the dedication and commitment of the volunteers of Ukrainians of Colorado. It demonstrates their willingness to go above and beyond to ensure that people in Ukraine receive the aid they require. By working with other volunteers in Europe, they have been able to extend their reach and make a difference in the lives of countless individuals in Ukraine.

Rallies

Rallies have been organized by a group of volunteers within Ukrainians of Colorado who are passionate about promoting Ukrainian culture and supporting the Ukrainian people. The event drew a diverse crowd of Ukrainians and non-Ukrainians alike, all united in their desire to show solidarity with Ukraine.

Throughout the rallies, participants engaged in a variety of activities, including music, prayers, and speeches by refugees, senators, and volunteers with the organization. The highlight of the event was a march through downtown Denver, where participants waved Ukrainian flags and chanted slogans in support of Ukraine. The rallies were particularly timely given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The country has been locked in a struggle with Russia for years, and tensions have escalated in recent months. Ukrainians of Colorado wanted to show their support for Ukraine and draw attention to the ongoing crisis.

The rallies were, and continue to be, a success with many attendees expressing their gratitude for the opportunity to come together and show their support for Ukraine. Ukrainians of Colorado is committed to continuing its work in promoting Ukrainian culture and supporting the Ukrainian people. They have provided over $20,000 in funds towards humanitarian aid.

Education

Historical Education:

One of Ukrainians of Colorado’s initiatives is to provide education on Ukrainian history to the public. They have done this by hosting events at various locations such as Tattered Cover Bookstore, several breweries, Conifer Rotary Club, and Denver Women Press Club, to name a few.

Through these events, Ukrainians of Colorado has provided an opportunity for the public to hear the true history of Ukraine, which has been distorted or misrepresented by the Russian government in the past. By educating the public, Ukrainians of Colorado hopes to promote a better understanding and appreciation of Ukrainian culture and history.

The events hosted by Ukrainians of Colorado have covered a range of topics, including the Holodomor, a man-made famine in Ukraine in the early 1930s, and the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine. Speakers at these events have included scholars, activists, and members of the Ukrainian-American community.

By providing education on Ukrainian history, Ukrainians of Colorado is not only helping to dispel myths and misinformation about Ukraine but is also promoting a deeper understanding of the country's rich culture and history. Through these educational opportunities, Ukrainians of Colorado hopes to inspire others to learn more about Ukraine and to become advocates for its people.

Pysanky Classes:

Ukrainians of Colorado has been offering pysanky classes to members of the community for several years. Pysanky is the traditional Ukrainian art of decorating eggs using wax and dyes. The practice has a long history in Ukraine, and it is typically associated with the celebration of Easter. The process involves using a stylus to draw designs on the surface of a raw egg, which is then dipped in a series of dyes to create intricate patterns and designs.

Participants in the classes learn how to prepare the eggs, apply wax to create designs, and use a variety of dyes to color the eggs. They also learn about the symbolism and meanings behind the different designs and colors used in pysanky.

The classes are a great opportunity for people of all ages to learn about Ukrainian culture and traditions, and to engage in a hands-on activity that is both creative and educational. They also provide an opportunity for members of the Ukrainian community to come together and celebrate their heritage.

Cooking Classes:

One of the ways that the organization achieves their mission of preserving the Ukrainian culture is by hosting cooking classes that focus on traditional Ukrainian dishes eaten during holidays such as Christmas and Easter.

Ukrainians of Colorado's cooking classes are taught by experienced chefs who have a deep knowledge of traditional Ukrainian cuisine. The classes provide an opportunity for members of the Ukrainian community to learn about their cultural heritage and to connect with others who share their traditions. Participants in the classes learn how to prepare traditional Ukrainian dishes step-by-step, from the ingredients to the finished product. They also learn about the cultural significance of the foods they are preparing, and how they are traditionally eaten and enjoyed in Ukraine.

Overall, the cooking classes offered by Ukrainians of Colorado are a great way to preserve and promote traditional Ukrainian cuisine and culture in Colorado. They provide an opportunity for members of the community to learn new cooking skills and to connect with their heritage in a fun and interactive way.

Refugees and Members of Ukrainians of Colorado Speaking on the War:

The war in Ukraine has forced many people to flee their homes and seek refuge in other countries. Ukrainian refugees have shared their stories of when the war started in Ukraine last year and sharing their experiences on how they had to flee the country. Many have spoken publicly at fundraisers to raise awareness and funds for those affected by the conflict.

The stories of Ukrainian refugees are heartbreaking, and they shed light on the realities of war and displacement. Many have witnessed firsthand the destruction of their homes and communities, and the loss of loved ones. They have faced unimaginable challenges, including escaping danger and finding safety in other countries.

Despite these challenges, Ukrainian refugees have shown remarkable resilience and strength. They have shared their stories to raise awareness of the situation in Ukraine and to help those affected by the conflict. Many have spoken publicly at fundraisers, sharing their experiences and calling for support for those in need.

Their stories are a powerful reminder of the realities of war and displacement. Through their efforts, they have raised awareness and funds for those affected by the conflict. Their resilience and strength are an inspiration, and we must continue to support their efforts to help those in need.

Film Showings:

Ukrainians of Colorado has collaborated with the Denver Film Society to bring awareness to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The film screenings have provided a unique opportunity for the public to gain insight into the conflict and the experiences of those affected by it. By showing films like "Klondike" and "20 Days in Mariupol," they have been able to showcase the human toll of the war on the Ukrainian people and bring attention to the issue.

"Klondike" tells the story of a Ukrainian family living on the border of Russia and Ukraine during the start of the war. Despite the village being captured by armed forces, Irka, the protagonist, refuses to leave her house. The film sheds light on the personal struggles of those caught in the conflict and the emotional toll it takes on them.

"20 Days in Mariupol" offers a glimpse into the experiences of journalists covering the war in Ukraine. The film captures the team's struggles to cover the war atrocities and to transmit their footage out of the besieged city of Mariupol. The filmmakers' bravery in the face of danger and their commitment to capturing the truth highlights the importance of accurate and reliable journalism in conflict zones.

Through their collaboration with the Denver Film Society, Ukrainians of Colorado has been able to bring the war in Ukraine to the forefront of people's minds. By showing films that provide a personal and journalistic perspective on the conflict, they have raised awareness about the ongoing crisis and the struggles of those affected by it.

Tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed, and supply chains for basic necessities have been disrupted, leaving many people homeless and without access to food, medicine, and other essentials. The organization seeks to connect individuals directly to help each other, save lives, and foster a sense of gratitude and connection without the bureaucracy and limitations of traditional non-profit organizations.

Human Hearts United believes that compassion and humanity do not have borders or political affiliations, and that millions of people are willing and able to help their fellow humans. The organization aims to provide a personal connection between those in need and those who are willing to help, allowing donors to feel certain that their aid is going directly to those who need it most.

In the face of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the Polish Community of Denver has demonstrated solidarity with the Ukrainian community by collaborating and hosting a variety of events and fundraisers. These events aimed at raising awareness about the situation in Ukraine and supporting Ukrainians in their struggle.

One such event was the "Helping Hands for Ukraine" fundraiser, which was organized by the Polish American Congress Colorado Chapter and held in partnership with the Ukrainian community. The event included cultural performances, food, and drink, and raised funds for humanitarian aid efforts in Ukraine.

The Polish Community of Denver has also been instrumental in providing support to Ukrainians of Colorado during this challenging time. The collaboration between these two communities highlights the power of community-driven initiatives in making a positive impact on the world.

Project C.U.R.E.

Project C.U.R.E. is the largest provider of donated medical supplies and equipment to developing countries around the world. The organization has collaborated with Ukrainians of Colorado, a community-based organization, to send medical pallets to Ukraine.

The partnership between Project C.U.R.E. and Ukrainians of Colorado began in response to the urgent need for medical supplies in Ukraine. The country has been facing a healthcare crisis due to the ongoing conflict in the eastern part of the country. Hospitals and clinics in Ukraine are struggling to provide adequate medical care to their patients due to a shortage of basic medical supplies such as gloves, masks, and gowns, etc.

Through the collaboration, Project C.U.R.E. and Ukrainians of Colorado have been able to package and send medical supplies to Ukraine in the form of medical pallets. These pallets contain a variety of medical supplies. The medical pallets are shipped directly to hospitals and clinics in Ukraine, where they are distributed to those in need.

Various Restaurants

In recent years, the organization has collaborated with various restaurants throughout Colorado to raise funds for those affected by the war in Ukraine. These restaurants include Loveland Tap and Tavern in Loveland, CO, The Thin Man in Denver, CO, and Molotov Kitchen in Denver, CO, to name a few.

Additionally, the events often include cultural food and drinks to celebrate Ukrainian culture and raise awareness of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The collaboration between Ukrainians of Colorado and these Colorado restaurants has been successful in raising funds and awareness for those affected by the war in Ukraine. By bringing the community together, the events have helped to strengthen ties between Ukrainians and other members of the Colorado community.

Outreach, Advocacy and Public Affairs

America’s support for Ukraine and its armed forces has been essential this past year. Recognizing this, Ukrainians of Colorado made outreach to our elected public officials, especially our Congressional delegation, an integral part of our work. We reached out to members of both parties to remind them of the critical importance of Ukraine’s struggle to America’s own security. Meetings with Senator Hickenlooper; Representatives DeGette (1st District), Crow (6th District) and Buck (4th District); as well as Denver City Councilpersons Black (Council District 4) and Flynn (Council District 2); underlined the breadth of bipartisan support for Ukraine at all levels of government. Governor Jared Polis spoke to our annual Ukrainian festival in August.

This effort culminated in the Colorado State Senate and House of Representatives issuing commendations to Ukrainians of Colorado on February 25, 2023. The Senate commendation, sponsored by Senators Lisa Cutter and Joann Ginal, said that the Colorado State Senate “recognizes and commends Ukrainians of Colorado for their effort in allieviating the suffering of Ukrainians abroad as well as their advocacy on behalf of the sizeable population of Ukrainians who currently reside in Colorado.”

Ukrainians of Colorado also pursued an active media affairs campaign. Interviews of Ukrainians of Colorado representatives with outlets such as CNN, The Denver Post, Colorado Public Radio, the Colorado Springs Gazette, The (Ft. Collins) Coloradoan, as well as nearly all local TV stations, made us among the best known volunteer organizations in the state.

Our public affairs work was not limited to local politicans and media. Our networking extended to other Ukrainian groups and leaders in the United States, such as John Hewko, CEO of Rotary International and contacts with the Ukrainian Consul General in Houston. These contacts will be built upon in the coming months as we chart a course to help Ukraine not only succeed in repulsing Russian aggression but rebuild institutions and communities once the invaders have been expelled.

Conclusion

This past year has been traumatic for Ukrainians everywhere, but it has strengthened our resolve at Ukrainians of Colorado. It has been a busy year – from fundraisers, meetings, to working with government officials for various ways to support Ukraine. Our mission has been to provide aid to those in dire need in Ukraine, focusing on providing help to Eastern Ukraine. With partnered initiatives such as Sunflower Seeds Ukraine and Human Hearts United, Ukrainians of Colorado has been able to provide a variety of support. From aiding soldiers on the frontlines, to hospitals, to children in orphanages.

Most importantly, Ukrainians of Colorado could not have accomplished everything we did without the help of all of our volunteers and donors. This organization is a collective effort, and it will not stop until victory is achieved.

СЛАВА УКРАЇНІ!
